|Overview||BTMU's predecessor company the Bank of Tokyo opened a representative office in Johannesburg in 1961, but due to international economic sanctions against apartheid, the office closed in 1986. The Johannesburg Representative Office was reopened in 1991 after the abolition of apartheid, incorporating the the territory of the former Nairobi Representative office. The Johannesburg office manages our business in 47 out of Africa's 55 countries. Currently 2 staff members are working at the office.
South Africa's economy is achieving strong growth through exports of primary products such as gold, iron ore and diamonds. In this region, both Japanese and local companies place tremendous value on BTMU’s support of their businesses in the country's growing economy, and we have enhanced our presence to support this trust. As the only Japanese bank in South Africa, we provide our customers with a wide range of banking services in African countries.
